All packed and Ready to Go!

We’re all packed and ready for our trip to Australia. I manged to get all my stuff into my North Face Modem rucksack. I’ll be taking my Nikon D5000 SLR camera and my Samsung netbook. I’ve made a backup of my important files incase anything goes wrong with the netbook on my trip – touch wood!

We’re finishing work early then nipping back home to get our stuff then heading off to Bangkok airport. We are changing at KL before flying to Melbourne overnight.

We have a good few ours at KL so hopefully there are things to do at the airport or they at least have wifi. I’ve been there before on a stop ver to the UK and I don’t remember it being too action packed but we shall see.

Google Flight Checker

There is a quick way to check if your flight is running to schedule using Google.

If you type ‘flight’ then the flight number into Google then press search it should show you the details of the flight using data from www.flightstats.com

Beware that flight numbers are regularly reused so make sure it is your flight that is shown and not another flight using the same number. To avoid this don’t check your flight until the day of take off or as close to it as possible.

Got my Australia Visa

It took 12 hours for my Australia visa to get approved online.

This was a relief as I leave tomorrow.

It looks like I picked the right one as it is valid for:

You have been granted an eVisitor. Your eVisitor allows you to travel to and from Australia any number of times over the next 12 months. On each visit to Australia you can stay for a maximum of three (3) months.

Wifi in Australia

During my Australia trip I plan to do a blog post each day. We will be staying in hotels and hostels which I am guessing will have wifi but how widespread is wifi out and about in the towns and cities?

I will probably leave my netbook at the base each day but will bring my ipod touch with me. This means I can access sites like tripadvisor and wikitravel to read reviews and find out what to do.

Is there a wifi service I can sign up to for the three weeks that I’ll be out there? I’ll ask Google…

Nearly forgot about a Visa!

I thought that with Australia being part of the Empire I would be able to just turn up with my British passport and they would welcome me with open arms.

Maybe that was the case in the past but not anymore!

48 hours before my flight I thought I had better check what the visa requirements are for entering Australia and to my surprise you do need to apply for a tourist visa before you arrive. Luckily it can be done online and apparently only takes 24 hours so fingers crossed it will all go through in time.

There are lots of different visa which seem to have the same description which makes it hard to pick one. In the end I went for this one:
